WHITE STEEL
Egress Window Wells

Installation Instructions

1.)  Step 1) Position the well with the window in the center and above the top of the window.  The distance between the edge of the window to the inside edge of the well should be the same on both sides.  The height should be approximately 3” to 4” above the expected final grade.

Step 2) If a grate will be used, set it on the well before and during the installation process to insure a proper fit.

Step 3) With the grate on the well, attach one of the top holes to the foundation using an appropriate concrete screw/anchor.  A washer is recommended.  Level the well and attach the other side.  Remove the grate and set it aside.

Step 4) Continue to attach the well to the foundation at every other hole.

Step 5) Fill the space below the well (4” to 6” minimum depth) with pea gravel for drainage.  If the soil is dense, such as clay, consider using a drain at the bottom of the well and tying into an existing system or provide for drainage away from the window well into more porous soil.

Step 6) Before backfilling around the well, support the inside with a knee brace or cross bucking.  All bracing should be left in place until the construction activity is completed.

Step 7) The backfill area should be clean and at least 12”wide.

Step 8) Fill the area around the well with pea gravel evenly in layers of 6” to 8”.  This procedure should be done by hand and the material is not to be compacted.  Within 6” of the final grade, fill the remaining area with topsoil that is slopped away from the well in all directions.

Step 9) An escape ladder should be positioned on the center front of the well by hanging it over the edge and attaching it with sheet metal screws in the holes at the bottom of the ladder.

Step 10) Re-Install the grate.
